Hey guys,

I'm in the mood of getting another fighting game. I only have Tekken Tag
Team which I already beat and I'm looking for another challenge.

I have in mind Soul Calibur II, Virtua Fighter 4 and King of Fighters 2001.
What can you guys tell me about these games in terms of graphics, gameplay
and fun factor? Are there others I should consider looking at?

I've gone to PS2 game websites and read articles about these games, but
nothing beats person-to-person feedback.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

SC2 and VF4 Evo is the way to go.

VF4 evo: is a very deep, semi realistic fighting game that incorparates
different fighting styles. Each fighting style is unique with positives and
negatives, and difficult to master. As far as graphics its more of a
simulation fighter so there arn't any graphic niches, like sparks,
fireballs, etc... just very well done envirnments and character models.

SC2 is more of an arcade fighter with weapons, fast responsive gameplay,
amazing overall graphics.

Get both games, VF4 evo is only $20

I couldn't have said it better myself. I prefer SCII as I like the more
outlandish, arcadey type fighters, but VF4 Evolution is just about the most
serious fighter out there.

Joe, if you think VF4: Evolution is an Arcade fighter, how would you
classify SCII or Tekken 4 or DOA 2: Hardcore?

I thought VF4: Evolution was every bit the involved fighter that reviewers
were claiming... I didn't care for it because it was too involved, IMHO... I
prefer SCII or at the most Tekken...

They're arcade fighters. All arcade means is that the game was initially
designed to be played in an arcade. Says nothing about the game's depth
or quality.

Pretty much any fighting game worth playing is fairly involved once you
start trying to get down to the nuts and bolts. SC2 for example
outclasses Tekken for depth, and is bested only by VF4. It just has a
hard to get past (thanks to the iffy AI) perception that it's a masher.

Well, VF4 is an arcade fighter. It's one of Sega's biggest coin op
titles in Japan 'ya know. ;)

Personally I'd call games like K-1 and the UFC games sims. VF4 has too
many elements that just have nothing in common with real fighting to
qualify.

Well it is a fighting game, so yeah well it is an arcade style game,
aren't they all? To be fair both of these games offer a bit more than
just fight through 8-10 characters and then the boss though. If you
doesn't play fast and *spazzy*, uh I guess there are wrestling games
where you have slow boring grapling with sweaty guys in spandex,

Giant Gram's a great game despite it being an arcade wrestling game.
Still can't beleive that people gave Royal Rumble passing marks simply
because it was an "arcade" wrestling game. Wrestlefest had more strategy
aand depth than the POS that is RR.

Another vote for Soul Calibur II here. The KoF series is great, especially
if you're a Neo-Geo/SNK fan, but on the PS2 it seems quite different. VF4
would probably be my personal 3rd choice, but only because I prefer
arcade-style fighters and GFX over their more realistic counterparts.

Well, as far as a one player mode, once you unlock the characters
thats pretty much it but a couple of the games you mentioned offer a
little more. Mo is betta.

Both Soul Calibur II with its Weapon Master mode and Virtua Fighter 4
Evo with its quest mode are without a doubt the best single player
features currently available IMHO. While I do think VF4:E is the
superior game overall, I really dig SC II's Weapon Master mode because
it doesn't ask you "Deflect your opponents attacks four times in row
to win this match". Its alot more straight forward. Its hard to
explain. You didn't mention Tekken 4, its good but it is pretty much
TTT w/o the Tag and a couple of new characters and freshened up
graphics.

If you dig 2d fighters than the KoF 2000/2001 pack is a sweet deal but
it is an arcade fighter. Personally, I just like taking on the ultra
cheap bosses in arcade mode over and over but all these games are alot
more fun with a second player. Guilty Gear X2 is a nice 2d fighter
too, a little bit more over the top but not Marvel vs. Capcom over the
top.

Depends on what your looking for 3D vs. 2D and will play more single
player or two player action.

Another good 2D fighter on the PS2 is Guilty Gear X (and, presumably,
Guilty Gear X2. tho I haven't played it; and to be fair, I played GGX
more on the Dreamcast, and only a bit on the PS2). The graphics are
higher resolution than the KOF series, but the KOFs have more history of course.
VF4Evo (or just VF4) or SC2 are fine choices as well. Personal
preference should help you choose among them; there's not much wrong
with any of them in their own ways.

Best of those mentioned is Soul Calibur2...well worth picking up!!!
Virtua Fighter4 or Virtua Fighter Evo are both great also, just depends
on if you want weapons or not, if you want weapons get Doul Calibur2.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution is regarded as the best 3D fighter in the world.

But it depends on your taste.
I prefer Street Fighter games myself.

www.soulcalibur.com
www.shoryuken.com
www.virtuafighter.com

All have dedicated communities that'll give you lengthy feedback on the
titles.

For that matter, try www.tekkenzaibatsu.com if you've never been.
There's more to the game than beating it...

But to actually answer your question, SC2's probably closest to Tekken
in terms of mechanics. VF4 EVO's quite a change of pace with a steep
learning curve. There's loads for a causual player to do in the game
though since you can compete in virtual tournaments etc to earn new
clothing from your character etc. (Also has the advantage of being a
Greatest Hits title.) KoF, like VF is somewhat of an aquired taste.

Also might want to look into Tekken 4 if you haven't already.

Thanks for the info guys...

I have played Tekken 4, but like bluecrab5 said, it's TTG without the tag.
I do like the playability of Tekken though. I'm gearing more towards SCII
'cause it has Spawn in it, plus I recall playing SCI on the PS1.

Once again, thanks a lot!

SCII on PS2 does not have Spawn, it has Heihachi. SCII on Xbox has
Spawn. SCII on GC has Link.

Fair warning since you're posting in the PS2 group... THe PS2 version has
Heihachi in it, not Spawn.

VF4: Evo should be on the top of your list (especially if you're in the
states - it's been released under the greatest hits label I think), follow
by SC2. I haven't played King of Fighters 2001 so I can't comment.

As most ppl have have already suggested VF4Evo is the best overall
fighting game out there, but the learning curve is a bit steeper than
SC2. If you're just looking for stress relief, then something like
SC2, T4 would be better suited. If you want depth, VF4Evo is the way
to go.

As far as 2D fighters goes I personally like the Guilty Gear series,
which looks far better than any of the SNK or Capcom fighters. Its
also fairly simple, with rather limited moves. Ofcourse KOF and SF has
more tradition, so if you're an old school player of those genres,
then its going to appeal alot to you. Another series to consider would
be the Capcom vs SNK series. If you can play imports, the newest one
of the series, SNK vs Capcom Chaos just came out and is a pretty good
game. I would recommend that.

Chaos is not part of the same series as Capcom vs. SNK. I think that the
different arcade hardware plus different set of developers plus the fact
that it was in parallel development at the same time as the CvSNK games
supports that.
It's more in the series of the VS games on the NGPC, and considering the
difference between MVS and NGPC, not all that much in the same vein. Tho
MOTM is quite possibly my favorite fighter, so I'm hoping to enjoy Chaos...

Try The Sims. Get one of your sims to marry another then start
