Future Shop is selling SCPH-50001 (the progressive scan units) with a free
DVD remote (the new model) for $199.99 CDN. Also, 'The Great Canadian
Superstore' has Sony 8MB Memory Cards for $24.88 CDN today.

Great day to pick up some PS2 hardware if you've been on the fence. I live
in BC - but I'm pretty sure like most Future Shop deals, it extends
chain-wide.

Don't know the current exchange, but that sounds better than here in U.S.

A question about the new model remote: I got mine recently and picked up
this remote:

http://www.us.playstation.com/peripherals.aspx?id=SCPH-10171

Is that the new one? It's the only one on Sony's NA site. What's the
difference?

Yeah, that'd be a Progessive scan PS2 + Remote for $153USD. Nice. :)

That is not the new one. The new PS2's have the IR port integrated into the
unit. The model number on the new remote is SCPH-10420.

Here's a picture of it (UK Packaging, but remote is the same.)

Sorry for the long URL. Bear in mind this remote only works with PS2 models
SCPH-50000 and above.

hmm, yeah, I've got the newest PS2 with the built in IR and progressive,
etc. Got them both less than a week ago actually. Wonder what the
differences are? They seem to have identical buttons except I see two extra
buttons at the top of that one. Mine works fine though, don't use the IR
add on. Wonder if it would be worth taking it back for the newer one?

oic, the new buttons allow you to power the unit and operate the tray.

Since it seems major US retailers are not even listing that one yet, I guess
I'll just stick with what I have for now unless the new ones show up in time
for me to do a return. For me those features would only be marginally
useful anyway and only when starting/finishing DVD movies. The remote sits
on top of the TV the rest of the time. FWIW, the older model does work just
fine with the new PS2's and the IR receiver addon is rendered unecessary.

Good to know! The new remote lists on the back:

"This DVD remote control (SCPH-10420) is not compatible with some
PlayStation2 systems. In you own one of the model numbers listed below, use
the SCPH-10171 remote control.

SCPH-30001, SCPH-35001, SCPH-30001 R, SCPH-39001, SCPH-39001/N,
SCPH-39010/N."

So, if the old remote is forwards-compatible, the new one ain't backwards
compatible. :)

yeah, because the older PS2's would need the IR addon, I suppose. I bet the
new one would work as a replacement for an old one, if someone had the IR
addon. The two new buttons probably wouldn't work for the same reason they
left them off the old remote: because the PS2 wouldn't be reading the
controller port the IR addon was connected to while in sleep mode (or off).

one last note, my PS2 is SCPH-50001. It does have the newer remote pictured
on the back of the box and the manual does specify the new part number. I
never noticed because I just bought the only type Best Buy had. oh well...
